The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game where players place bets in order to win the pot (the sum total of all bets made on one hand). There are many different poker games, but all share some common elements.
Each player is dealt 2 cards. The player to the left of the dealer takes the first turn, and can choose to call the current bet (put out chips equal to or greater than the amount raised by the previous player), raise it further, or push their cards to the dealer facedown without putting any chips into the pot at all (fold).
When the first round of betting is complete, 1 additional card is dealt to each player. This is called the flop. Then another round of betting starts, and players can check their own hands, compare them with the other players’, or bluff.
The highest hand wins. The poker hands are as follows: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, three of a kind, two pair, and pair.
There are many rules that vary between poker variants, but there is a general rule that any hand of a higher category beats any hand of a lower category. In addition to knowing the probabilities of getting a certain type of card, a good poker player will also pay attention to the betting patterns of other players and their chip stack size. For example, a short-stacked player will be desperate for a win and may be easier to bluff against.
