Poker is a card game that takes skill and strategy to win. It is played in casinos, poker clubs, and over the Internet. It is a favorite of the American public, and it has become the national card game.<\/p>\n
There are hundreds of variations of poker. Each variation has its own rules, but the basics of the game are usually similar. In most games, players begin by placing an initial amount of chips into the pot, called a blind.<\/p>\n
In a betting interval, each player to the left of the player who made the first bet can either call that bet by putting into the pot the same number of chips; or raise, by putting in more than the required number of chips; or drop, by putting no chips into the pot and dropping out of the betting.<\/p>\n
A betting interval ends when a player checks (i.e., puts no chips into the pot and drops out of the betting). Checks are allowed only if no one else has bet in that betting interval.<\/p>\n
Betting is the key to Poker, for a bet can either win or lose the pot. If all players have bet in a betting interval, a showdown occurs, where each player shows their hand and the best hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
