Poker is a game of cards, usually played with chips that stand in for money. The players compete for a pot of money, and the player with the highest hand wins.<\/p>\n
The game is played with a standard 52-card deck, four of each card in each suit: hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds. The rank of poker hands is determined by their odds (probability).<\/p>\n
Three-card combinations are ranked by the highest single card; two pairs beat one pair, and straights beat flushes. If two hands are identical, card for card, they tie and divide the pot equally.<\/p>\n
When two or more hands are tied, the highest single card breaks the tie. If no single card can be used to break the tie, then a combination of the highest two cards is called a high card and beats a pair.<\/p>\n
There are several poker variations that differ in their rules and strategy. Some are cash games, while others are tournaments.<\/p>\n
In a cash game, each player begins the game with a stack of chips. The first player to the left of the dealer (or the person who has the dealer button) makes a bet and the rest of the players must “call” it by placing their own chips into the pot.<\/p>\n
